Community Foundation launches Smart and Caring Initiative

Community Foundation announces $1 Million in Cumulative Grants to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Region

Kenora– The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation is pleased to make two major announcements today including the launch of the Smart and Caring Communities Initiative as well as the awarding of $1Million in cumulative grants to the region’s charities since 2004.

Community Foundations of Canada President and CEO and two time Olympian Ian Bird, travelled to Kenora from Ottawa to recognize the efforts of donors, volunteers and grant recipients in helping to improve community living and the quality of life for citizens in the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Region.  “Congratulations on making such a positive impact to your community in a few short years, said Bird”. Bird is also launching Smart and Caring Communities, a landmark initiative that rallies Canada’s 180+Community Foundations in partnership with the Governor General of Canada. Under this national effort the movement will expand its reach and establish Smart & Caring Community Funds to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.

A very special granting ceremony will also be held to celebrate $1Million in cumulative grants to the region’s charities since 2004. “Thanks to our generous donors, sponsors and volunteers we are at our first million in grants today – this is just the beginning in providing support to our region” said Don Parfitt, Community Foundation President.  The Foundation’s Board of Directors along with Bird and municipal leaders unveiled a highway sign announcing the milestones.

The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation accepts donations and builds endowment funds – creating a nest egg that will always be there for the community. The investment income earned on the funds is granted to local registered charities that enhance the quality of life, in line with the donor’s wishes.  Since 2004, the Community Foundation has granted over $1,000,000 to over fifty five different local charities.

Because the Community Foundation supports all kinds of charities-not just one sector or issue area – we are well positioned to bring diverse voices together to address local issues. Together we build networks, we collaborate; we build community; – Building Forever Together
