Community Foundation Supports Kenora’s Emergency Shelter

Kenora – The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation is pleased to announce that thanks to gifts from generous donors, they will be providing $3,800 in support to Kenora’s Emergency Shelter, in the name of the late Mr. Faron Hall, Winnipeg’s Homeless Hero. The gifts come from the Winnipeg Foundation, an anonymous donor in Manitoba and the proceeds of Treaty Three Police Service’s Endowment Fund.

“These gifts are being made today in memory of the late Mr. Faron Hall of Winnipeg , a homeless individual who faced hardship and loss, but found joy in helping others, twice saving a life. He received many honors, including the mayor’s medal of valour and the Manitoba Royal Lifesaving Society Award; he requested the first $1,000 from an endowment fund set up in his name be sent to a local homeless shelter”, said Darlene MacGillivray, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “Kenora’s Emergency Shelter is in need of urgent financial support at this time to remain open and we know these dollars will be put to good use”, she stated. We thank our donors for making a significant difference during this time of need”.

“We greatly appreciate this support today. It means a great deal to our patrons and to our staff”, said Yvonne Bearbull, Executive Director at the Kenora Fellowship Centre where the Emergency Shelter is located.

The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation is a volunteer driven, public foundation, which accepts donations and builds endowment funds – creating a nest egg that will always be there for the community. The investment income earned on the funds is granted to local registered charities that enhance the quality of life, in line with the donors’ wishes. Our catchment area includes the City of Kenora and the neighbouring communities of Reddit, Minaki, Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls, the First Nations Territories and the unincorporated territories surrounding Lake of the Woods. Since 2004, thanks to our generous donors, our net assets have reached $4.6 million, while $1.7 Million has been granted to over fifty different local charities.

Because the Community Foundation supports all kinds of charities – not just one sector or issue area – we are well positioned to bring diverse voices together to address local issues. Together we build networks, we collaborate; we build community: Building Forever Together.
