“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.” George Bernard Shaw

Since the establishment of our lakefront community foundation, our efforts to improve community living and the quality of life for citizens and visitors to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Region, has been tied to the extensive participation of volunteers. Each community foundation is operated by a volunteer board of directors; a group of community-minded leaders who share a passion to help build more vital communities.

Volunteer opportunities also include serving on a variety of committees: Grant Making, Asset Development, Marketing and Communications, Finance, or playing an active role in planning our charity fundraisers, such as the Festival of Trees.

Director Kelly Williams, chair of the Marketing Committee, explains why she volunteers:

“I was part of the inaugural group of individuals who recognized the benefits of having a community foundation in Kenora to support the region’s charities. I am a passionate believer in the importance of ‘community’ and felt this was a vehicle where I could make a difference. I have not been disappointed. The Community Foundation is the one place where a small charity or a large not-for-profit
can both receive support for creative and worthwhile projects that benefit the Lake of the Woods Region.”

Laci Dingwall, a recent volunteer, feels that it is important for young people to get involved and have a hand in shaping the future of their community.

“I volunteer for the Community Foundation because it continues to have a positive impact on a diverse group
of individuals and organizations. The Community Foundation helps create a sustainable future for the city of Kenora and surrounding areas.”

Since 2004, the Community Foundation has distributed more than $1 million in grants to LOW charities. Thanks to our generous donors, our endowment fund has grown to $3 million. If you would like to become a volunteer, please contact our office at 807-467-4427.
