The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation is pleased to announce that they are partnering with the Governor General of Canada in seeking to make Canada a smarter and more caring nation.

As patron of Community Foundations of Canada, his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, has challenged Canadians to come together as we approach our 150th birthday in 2017.

His vision is that of “a smart and caring nation, where all Canadians can succeed, contribute, and develop their talents to their fullest potential.” The goals of the initiative include ensuring that every Canadian community is served by a community foundation by 2017, in addition to connecting the country by establishing Smart and Caring Endowment Funds.

Locally, the launch of the initiative occurred on November 7, 2012 and Volunteers from more than fifty Kenora and Lake of the Woods charities celebrate the awarding of $1 million in cumulative grants at the Smart and Caring Communities launch on November 7, 2012 included the unveiling of a new highway sign promoting the Community Foundation, the celebration of $1 million in cumulative grants made to Kenora and Lake of the Woods Region charities and a unique coming together of our generous donors, worthy grant recipients and dedicated volunteers at a very special granting ceremony. Additional elements of the initiative will be announced throughout 2013.

Since 2004, our Community Foundation has been building endowment funds thanks in part, to the financial support provided by lake residents. The investment income earned on the endowment funds is granted to registered charities, in line with the donor’s wishes. Our Community Foundation supports all charities, not just one sector or issue area—we are well positioned to bring diverse voices together to address local issues. Together we build networks; we collaborate, we build community.
