Keewatin Legion donates $75,000 to the Community Foundation
The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation is the grateful recipient of a total of $75,000 in legacy gifts from the Keewatin Legion. Jerry Lava, Royal Canadian Legion Kenora Branch 12 President, explained that due to declining membership and lack of volunteers, the branch was forced to surrender its charter and disperse their assets. “The members of the Keewatin Legion have a vested interest in the community and selected various charitable groups to support with the remainder of their assets. They chose to establish a $60,000 endowment fund for student bursaries at both local high schools, as well as a gift of $15,000 for the existing Keewatin Forever Endowment Fund.”, he said. “The members of Keewatin Legion are to be commended for establishing this endowment fund, which will support student post-secondary educational needs today and forever. This is a thoughtful and caring gift for our youth and their families. Each bursary will be valued at $1,000.”,said Darlene MacGillivray, Community Foundation Executive Director.” In addition, we have received a $15,000 donation to the Keewatin Forever Endowment Fund. This fund was established in 2008, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Keewatin. The fund makes grants to charities doing great work within the previous boundaries of the Town of Keewatin.”, she added.
