Youth in Philanthropy Granting Ceremony

The 8th annual Youth in Philanthropy granting ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 21st at the Beaver Brae Secondary Library. Students from Beaver Brae and Saint Thomas Aquinas presented a total of $4,000 to four chosen charities, in which $1,000 was given to each. Initially, the ‘young philanthropists’ identified ten organizations across the community as possible grant recipients. After much consideration, each group chose two organizations they felt were most deserving of the grants. Beaver Brae chose the Kenora Fellowship Centre and the Cat Shelter, while Saint Thomas Aquinas chose the Minto Parent Child Resource Centre and the Morning Star Detox Centre. The two student philanthropist groups notified the difficulty of their decisions, but were extremely happy to present grants to their chosen organizations. The students and grant recipients were joined by the Board of Directors and volunteers from the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Community Foundation, members of Kenora City Council, local media, Copperfin Credit Union staff, and friends of the program.

The Youth in Philanthropy Program, led by the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation, seeks to engage youth in their community and create an awareness of local needs.
